Digital converters must capture (A-D) and reproduce (D-A) audio at precisely timed intervals and the digital clock provides a stable timebase. If the timing of samples during conversion is not consistent jitter distortion occurs. Jitter can cause a subtle lack of clarity in an audio signal. Jitter does not occur when a digital signal is processed, stored, or transmitted.
