Term: Isolation

The amount of separation in dB of one sound or location relative to unwanted outside sounds. A vocal booth, for instance, provides isolation so that the vocal mic does not pick up other instruments or background noise. Isolation can be achieved through physical soundproofing and by using microphones with directional polar patterns.
