Surround sound was developed for theaters and includes 5.1 and 7.1 systems. A 5.1 system includes five speakers placed at ear height around the listening area (left, center, right, left rear surround, right rear surround) and a subwoofer. Surround systems are channel-based systems as opposed to modern object-based systems like Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio. (see also: Multichannel)
